With 32-bit program support going away on the Mac with Catalina we need to start seriously figuring out how to have WINE run on these newer systems so that reasonable instructions can be provided.

To install Wine on your Mac, you will need the following: macOS 10.10 (Yosemite) or above (but 10.15 Catalina is not recommended) Access to an Admin account, with password; An internet connection. X11 usually comes alongside your operating system: if you use Lion, look for it on your installation CD/DVD, it is there as an installation option; or, alternatively, download it here. 1) First, you should download and install MacPorts. After downloading it, you should proceed with a regular Mac installation procedure.

Right now we can use VMs (VirtualBox, Parallels, VM Fusion) using other operating systems (Ubuntu, Red Hat, or if you can actually get it to work an older version of the MacOS) thought doing this correctly is kind of 'uhhh, how do you do that?'
But is that the best (ie easiest) solution we can come up with or is there some other method on the table we could use?

WineConf Call for Hosts

This is a call for proposals to host the next WineConf sometime this year. Ideally proposals would present;

  • Proposed dates
  • Proposed city
  • Information on potential venues and travel

We'll need to choose a host relatively quickly as it does take time to plan and book the event. I'm hoping we can settle on a host by the end of February but ultimately that decision goes to the Wine Committee. Questions, comments, concerns can be posted on the WineConf mailing list. A draft of a guide to hosting has been started on the wiki [1]. Please take a look to get a sense of what is involved in hosting the conference.
